CHRIS VECCHIO "Tinguely's Children: Sculptors of the Post-industrial Machine Age" at the Hicks Art Center Gallery in Bucks County, PA.
August 24 - October 15, 2011
Curated by Susan Hagen, Tinguely's Children features the work of three contemporary artists who make lyrical, machine-inspired sculpture: Arthur Ganson of Stoneham, MA; Chris Vecchio of Philadelphia, PA; and Mark Zirpel of Seattle, WA. Though fiercely individualistic, together their work can be understood and appreciated from a steam-punk aesthetic, as well as in the context and lineage of modernist artists such as Jean Tinguely. Much of this work functions as a form of social commentary, as well as a personal and poetic statement. The exhibition includes both sculptural and two-dimensional works, such as preparatory sketches and photographs.

Pangaea: When The Continents Were One is a multi-media opera presented by Philadelphia based label and music collective, earSnake. The music and story for the opera were written by Nexus member, composer and sound artist Mike McDermott (Mikronesia) over the past 15 years.
Pangaea: When The Continents Were One will be premiered on November 11, 2011 (11/11/11) at The Rotunda in Philadelphia, PA. The multi-media opera will be presented by a 17 piece ensemble of strings, horns, flute, percussion, piano, electronics, guitars and voice. Sets, costumes, life sized puppets and masks are being designed by Liza Goodell of Spiral Q Puppet Theater and Tigre Bailando. In addition to the ensemble of musicians, singers and human puppets, Nico Dominguez (of Klip Collective) will be presenting images from the story that will be digitally projected and manipulated on stage. Pangaea's mix of world, chamber, electronic and rock music plus the blend of real life and digital visuals will make this premiere a truly modern spectacle of sight and sound.
There is a Kick Starter running now to support the premier of the opera. The Kick Starter runs until October 11. Donating money can get you CDs, tickets or even a master class with the composer. Support it today!
