My work can be categorized as installation, while also involving aspects of painting and sculpture. I am much more interested in making “places” than isolated objects and prefer to make work with a specific site in mind. On the other hand, I work in a way that allows for a lot of flexibility, and am interested in the ambient, chance effects that a site will have on one of my installations.
I work primarily with cheesecloth that I coat with rabbit skin glue and pigment. The resulting material can be translucent, so light is an important element. Everything is sewn together by hand. This refers to the history of women’s handwork- from darning and quilt-making to needlework samplers and silk embroidery- but it has also become an activity necessary to my thinking process.
