My work can broadly be described as "atypical portraiture". It is important to me that these portraits not be staged; that the spontaneity of the moment is captured. The images are taken with an amused, but respectful eye. What is reflected is a range of experiences and emotions; some are poetic, others are amusing, while others still are unsettling. The intent is to invoke an appreciation for the familiar and also acknowledge its vulnerability and impermanence.

I am interested in highlighting moments that might easily be missed. Giving me or any viewer an opportunity to reflect upon the grace, or chaos or uncertainty contained in the moment, as the case may be. I imagine that viewers are prompted to insert themselves in the experience to evoke memories or suggest a narrative of their own.

To date I have worked almost exclusively in the medium of traditional black and while photography.

The qualitative range available and the physical involvement of the medium provides me an organic depth for expression of the human emotion and condition. I try to capture/reflect the energy and dynamic sense of the moment by stepping
into the scene and into the medium.
