SUSAN ABRAMS I am a photographer and papermaker. Photography and hand papermaking are both process centered.
The melding of my paper and photographic vision occurs in the darkroom using applied silver emulsion. There are many more variables inherent in printing a photograph on handmade paper or fabric than on commercial paper. Every step in the process yields opportunities for interaction and discovery resulting in a unique print that embodies my artistic intention as well as the unexpected.

The photographs I incorporate into my work usually are of natural patterns and textures. I search for images that capture unique qualities in my subject. I select a paper and a negative that in combination will transform the image from one that is generically pleasing to one that is singular and often abstract. I am looking for an essence not easily defined. I am interested in the natural cycles that are part of life, observing closely, capturing the universal forces of generation, growth and decay. I am currently embarking on a new project that explores chance and intention (revealed and obscured), through portraits and natural imagery. These works were exhibited at Nexus in April 2005.
